Description
Taylorville Baptist Church was the Tuscaloosa News on July 18, 1969.
"Started as mission of Forest Lake Baptist under Dr. Bonnie Nichols. The first meeting was held September 21, 1960 in the living room of Mrs. P.L. Spiller's home. Seven people were present. The missions committee at Forest Lake under the direction of H.E. Harkey felt the need for a church in that area. The Brotherhood conducted a survey in the community. There were 17 families- 67 people- who said they would support a Baptist church in that area. Shortly after, the Taylorville School property was purchased and the school house was remodeled to be used as a church. The first pastor was J.H. Solley who came from Ogden, Utah, in 1961 and served until May, 1963. W.K.E. James served as interim pastor. Then from September 1963 until February, 1968 Adolph Phares served. In 1965, Forest Lake Baptist church floated a $45,000 bond issue for the purpose of building a new building and educational space. On August 3, 1965, a request was made to Forest Lake Baptist Church that Taylorville Mission be constituted into a church. On August 29, 1965 it was constituted. Corporate papers were drawn up by the Attorney Callahan who donated his services. On August 24, 1968 Ronald Jackson from Sylavaon Baptist in Sylacauga became pastor and is presently serving.
The church membership is 213; Sunday School enrollment is approximately 200; and Training Union enrollment is approximately 150. The budget is $23,619.0. The first budget was $6,000. With the expected growth and planning, more building is expected in the near future. The deacons have served the church since its beginning, H.E. Harkey, Sanford Williams, Clyde Smith, Wyatt Caruthers and Floyd Hicks."
