Description

Unity Baptist Church was the Tuscaloosa News Featured Church on October 9, 1970.

"The church was organized in 1932 with seven charter members of which only one is still a member, Mrs. Ellen Marlowe Noland. The first service was held in the new building in May of 1933. We had no pews and only nail kegs and planks to sit on. The floor was only half complete and it was not completed until 1939.

Otto Martz was the first pastor and he was an employee of Allen and Jemison. Since then, we have had 14 pastors. The first year, the total income for the church was about $100.00. The first building was built by donated labor and material from the community regardless of denomination. The education building was started in the early 1950s and completed in 1967.

The church continued to worship in the first building until the present building was erected and dedicated in 1964. In spite of early obstacles we have grown from the chartered membership to a membership of 365. We now average around 200 members in Sunday School each Sunday. We are located in a strategic community in the heart of the urban growth of our county. We feel we can serve the spiritual needs of most of the community because we are dedicated to honoring Christ in teaching, training, and developing the Christian life. We have all organizations in our church meeting regularly, better to give you a spiritual life. We need your presence. If you have in our community, to support the work our Lord has blessed.

H. V. Hardin is the present pastor."
