Description
George S. Shirley was a veteran banker, civic leader and trustee of the University of Alabama system.
Born in Tuscaloosa on Dec. 4, 1927, Shirley was a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa, attending Tuscaloosa High School. He entered the University of Alabama and later served in the U.S. Navy. Following his release from service he returned to the University where in 1949 he received his BA degree in the School of Commerce and Business Administration.
Shirley joined the staff of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association in 1949 and rose to the position of vice president before joining First National Bank in June, 1960 as an assistant vice president.
He retired from FNB, at that time an affiliate of AmSouth Corporation, as president and chief executive officer in 1988.
Shirley was elected to the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama in April 1987 representing the Sixth Congressional district. He retired from the board in June 1998. During his 11-year tenure, Shirley held many key leadership positions, including nine years as chairman of the audit committee.
Shirley and his wife Betty were well known for their support of the University of Alabama's RISE program, a model early-childhood educational facility housed in The Stallings Center on the UA campus. Also involved with many charities and civic endeavors, Shirley was honored in 1971 as the Tuscaloosa Citizen of the Year and was inducted posthumously into the Tuscaloosa County Civic Hall of Fame in 2003.
At his death on August 8, 2000, Shirley was survived by his wife Betty, and daughters Betsy Gary, Allison Pritchard and Evelyn Pritchard and several grandchildren.
