Description

On Feb. 27, 1988, Memorial Coliseum at the University of Alabama was renamed Coleman Coliseum in honor of Jefferson Jackson Coleman.

A native of Livingston, Alabama, Coleman enrolled in the University of Alabama in 1924. The next year, at 19 years old, he became a student secretary to head football coach Wallace Wade. Two years later, he became business manager for the athletic department and held that position for 27 years.

In 1954, he was named director for alumni affairs which he remained until his retirement in 1974 and was responsible for significant growth in the structure and success of that organization.

Because of his expertise, his many contacts and an unhesitating commitment to do every job well, Coleman helped coordinate the 100th, the 125th and the 150th anniversary observances of the University. In the late 1960s he chaired a committee for the planning and construction of Memorial Coliseum that opened in 1968.

A stalwart fan of Alabama football, Coleman saw his first game in 1924 and between that contest and 1970, he had attended all but two contests. At the time of his death in 1995. he was the only person to have attended every Crimson Tide bowl game, starting with the 1926 Rose Bowl.
