Description

St. Matthias' Episcopal Church was the Tuscaloosa News Featured Church on July 25, 1967. Rev. James Lilly was minister at that time.

"St. Matthias' Episcopal Church was organized in June 1961 as a mission of Christ Episcopal Church and with the support and encouragement of Canterbury Chapel. The Charter membership was comprised of twenty-nine communicants of whom twenty-seven came from Christ Episcopal Church.

Until the beginning of school in September, the congregation met in Canterbury Chapel. The return of students necessitated a move of Sunday services to the old Alberta Junior High School auditorium. There the congregation worshiped until January 1962 when they rented Sunday use of the Seventh Day Adventist Church on the U.S. 11 Bypass across from an 11-acre plot purchased for construction of church buildings. Dedication of the First building, a Parish House, was held July 7, 1961. From that date on, worship services have been held in the Parish House. In 1966 the first unit of an educational building was completed and in 1967 St. Matthias furnished land to Boy Scout Troop 43 for the building of a scout hut. By June 1969 membership had reached 160 communicants representing 60 family units.

The attraction of St. Matthias' for those who have banded together to found, strengthen and support a new outpost for God's work with His people is expressed in many ways: "The population growth of the city is moving in this direction and where there are people the ministry of the church is needed."..."We need a place in our neighborhood to worship God, to educate our children in His ways and to train us so we can communicate our faith to others by word and deed."..."The people are so warm and friendly."...I feel a part of the church, I am needed." ..."I have something to do, a way to express my gratitude to God in meaningful acts of service."..."My contribution makes a difference."..."There is a spirit of sharing and concern that's hard to explain..."

Based on such expressions the purpose of St. Matthias' seems to be emerging in terms of (1) the formation of a close-knit fellowship through which Christ is encountered, (2) the provision and maintenance of facilities, equipment and staff for Worship and Education, (3) the initiating and performing of community service projects in the name of our Lord, and (4) concerned, responsible participation in the larger Church of Diocese, Nation and World. It is exciting to be a part of this growing work."
