Description

Mrs. Lydia Alma Whitten was the first Nursing Services Director at Druid City Hospital.

She grew up in Ethelsville, Ala., and wanted to be a nurse from a young age. Her cousin, a doctor, encouraged her to go to the Hillman Hospital School of Nursing in Birmingham. She went and was awarded her cap in 1925.

She worked at that school for 15 years as a supervisor and later as director of the school. She moved to Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa in 1941 and worked as a nursing arts instructor. The following year she became educational director of the school and led the drive to have the school become affiliated with the University of Alabama. In 1948, she became director of the Nurses at Druid City Hospital and also director of the School of Nursing. She retired from Druid City Hospital in 1970 at the age of 67.

Identified in this picture is Whitten, second from left, and nurse Betty Brinyark, third from left. On right is nurse Celia Criswell.
