Description
Dr. Ruby Tyler was one of the 50 doctors on staff when the new Druid City Hospital (DCH) opened in 1952. She was also the only female doctor on staff at that time. Ruby Tyler Parkway, near the DCH Regional Medical Center, was named in her honor.
According to her obituary found in the Tuscaloosa News on 24 March 1995, Dr. Tyler was born Ruby Easterling in Collins, Mississippi on April 2, 1900. Dr. Tyler was a graduate of Mississippi State College for Women and of Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Tyler moved with her husband Dr. Jesse Martin to Tuscaloosa in 1934. Dr. Tyler was a pediatrician from 1934 to 1966 when she joined the medical staff at Parlow where she would stay until her retirement in 1982. Outside of work Dr. Tyler was an active member of First Baptist Church, and mother to three daughters: Martha Tyler Jamison, Ruby Tyler Fitts, and Betty Tyler Wilson.
