Description

The Old Huntsville Road 4-mile marker in Alberta was erected in 1824, It was located 4 miles from the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse which was then located on 32nd Avenue in Newtown. (The courthouse in Newtown was built in 1822 and was destroyed by a tornado in 1842.)

An historic marker was erected in 1985 by the Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society (Historic Tuscaloosa).  The marker was destroyed in the April 2011 tornado.

Four mile post erected in 1824 on portion of road, Huntsville to Tuscaloosa. Prior to 1812, parts of Huntsville Road was Indian Trail.  White settlers began 1816; improvements made by Act of Congress 1818; by 1827 used for mail transport, Washington to New Orleans.  Stage Coaches and wagons transported passengers and mail from Tuscaloosa to Huntsville.  The mile post location measured from Tuscaloosa County Courthouse, located 32nd Ave. in Newtown and began in Tuscaloosa at University Blvd and Queen City Ave.
