This photo shows the south side of University Boulevard in downtown Tuscaloosa (Ala.) looking west. In the foreground is Gray's Men's Shop. Next to it is Pizitz department store, then Woolworth's and Central Drug Store.
Gray's Men's Shop was owned by Eddie Gray Jones. Jones and Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant were good friends and played golf together. On a buying trip to Chicago, Jones bought a supply of houndstooth hats to sell and gave Coach Bryant his first one.
Daniel Gray Jones bought the store from his father in the late 1950s.
