Description

Homecoming, 1963 - Alabama cheerleaders are shown with an early version of Big Al. Cheerleaders, from left to right, are Karen McQuillen Watkins, now of Birmingham; Betty Waite Graves Zoller, of Huntsville; Alice Ann Duncan Hankins, also of Huntsville; and Susan Copeland Wier, now of Columbus, Ga. Wearing the Big Al costume is Melford Espy.

The head of the mascot was made of fiberglass, making it heavy and hard to balance and also difficult to ship when the cheerleaders went to out-of-town games.
