Vails was killed on December 10, 1950, while serving with Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Maj. Vails' remains were never recovered. Via his World War II draft record found at this database: Ancestry.com. U.S. WWII Draft Cards Young Men, 1940-1947, Maj. Vails was the son of Mrs. Bertha Lee Vails of Tuscaloosa. For his service Maj. Vails was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and multiple other decorations.
