Description

Rusty, the Big Red Dog is lifted into place on top of Stephens Studio and Gallery on Main Avenue in Northport, Alabama.

The sculpture was created in 1983 by Larry Godwin, who worked with his brothers in his father's feed store in Dothan, Alabama. Animals were created for each type of feed sold in the store. Bob's Feed Store can be faintly seen on the trailer that holds Rusty.

Georgine Clark, Kentuck founder and former executive editor of the organization, bought the sculpture in 1995, with the idea that it could be hauled around for exhibits, but made the decision to put it on top of the building where it became an icon in Northport.

According to" Images of America - Northport," (2012, Friends of Historic Northport) the building on which Rusty was placed was originally an automobile service station, the first service station in Northport called Strong's Service Station. The building was built around 1921 and was designed to allow automobiles to drive into the station under a roof for service. Manley Sullivan also operated a service station there. Lackey Stephens leased the building in 1998 for an art studio and renovated the sculpture.
