Description
Morris Seymour Sokol opened SOKOL’S Furniture Store in Tuscaloosa in 1928. The store branched out across Alabama in a matter of years and Sokol finally sold the chain in 1969.
With his business administration degree from the University of Alabama and his knowledge of communal necessity, Sokol raised millions of dollars for the Tuscaloosa community and UA combined. Sokol took it upon himself to head numerous fund raising campaigns for Tuscaloosa’s recreational establishments and youth clubs.
Often described as a humorous and charismatic man, “Uncle Munny” was a beloved member of the community and quite the outdoor sports enthusiast. He was the namesake of Munny Sokol Park and the Munny Sokol Open, a golf tournament at Indian Hills Country Club that benefited the Boys and Girls Ranch.
Sokol was inducted into the Tuscaloosa County Civic Hall of Fame in 2001, the first year of the award that was designed to honor citizens who made long-term, significant contributions to the development of the county while at the same time celebrating the community's history and heritage.
