Sage Alexander Monnish, 1888-1908
Subject
Calvary Baptist Church (Tuscaloosa, AL)
Description
Sage was the son of Frederick William (F.W.) and Lillian Olmsted Monnish. He died of typhoid fever in 1908 at the age of 21.
F.W. Monnish, at his own expense and under his personal supervision, built and gave to the First Baptist Church a building to be used for a Sunday School as a memorial to Sage whose untimely death was a source of great grief to his family and friends.
This building became the home of the Sage A. Monnish Memorial Church in 1911 when 77 members withdrew to create a separate Baptist church. This church changed its name to the Calvary Baptist Church in 1925 at the insistence of the Monnish family when a new building was started on adjoining lots given by Mrs. Lillian Monnish.
