According to the book Blocton: A History of an Alabama Coal Mining Town by Carl Adams, Pvt. Richard Howard Moon was killed on February 26, 1945, during the battle of Iwo Jima. When Pvt. Moon's remains were returned to West Blocton in 1948, it is reported that he came home on the same train he had once worked on.
