Water Tender Charles E. Fondren was killed on October 16, 1942, when his ship went down near Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Fondren was a graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Fondren of Vance.
