Description
Herbert E. Westervelt was born on November 20, 1858. He founded several paper industries in Illinois using wheat straw and then wood pulp. Consolidating several facilities into the Prairie States Corporation, a paper-making business, in the early 1900's. He also invented and patented equipment to make flat-bottomed paper bags, E-Z Opener bags. In 1927 the business was again consolidated and the headquarters moved to Tuscaloosa as the Gulf States Paper Corporation. He served as President and Chairman of the Board until his death in 1938.
He was married to Emma Neilson Westervelt. They had two daughters Mildred Westervelt Warner and Helene Westervelt Thielens.
