Description

This information is from the 1929 thesis of Syndia Keene Smith: "The old Penn-Crabb-Van Hoose home of Tuscaloosa is an excellent example of the Southern Colonial House. It is a large dwelling of refined simplicity and practical taste. Built around 1840, it housed the well-known brothers, James Alexander Van Hoose (1852-1936) of Birmingham and Wolsey Van Hoose (1850-1922) of Tuscaloosa, during their boyhood days. In later years, this house was acquired by Stillman College."

James grew up to become the 10th mayor of Birmingham. George Wolsey Van Hoose was Register in Chancery in Tuscaloosa County.
