According to the book Blocton: A History of an Alabama Coal Mining Town by Charles Adams, Cpl. John W. Fancher Jr. was killed on February 14, 1943, while serving with the United States Army in North Africa. Cpl. Fancher was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Fancher and the brother to Lt. Milton Fancher who would be killed in a bombing raid over Germany 3 months after his brother's death.
