Description
An account of the resource
Dr. Cordell Wynn was president of Stillman College for 15 years beginning in 1982 and enrollment at the predominantly black liberal arts school almost doubled to more than 1,000 students under his leadership.
A native of Eatonton, Ga., Wynn was dean of education at Alabama A&M when he was named president of Stillman. The Tuscaloosa college was losing enrollment at the time and there was talk it might be closed.
"It wasn't just a set of circumstances, it was by God's design that brought him to Stillman, and he was the person we needed at just that right time," Sarah Davis, longtime assistant and eventual vice president for administration under Wynn, told The Tuscaloosa News. In addition to leading Stillman for 15 years, Wynn became a state and local civic leader.
Wynn served as chairman of the Tuscaloosa Housing Authority board. He served as a member of the Alabama Ethics Commission and was former president of the United Negro College Fund Board.
He started his career as a teacher in the Bibb County, Ga., school system. Wynn wrote the desegregation plan for the system as an assistant superintendent.
He later was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to a national advisory committee on education and was a consultant for desegregation of schools for President Richard Nixon.
When Wynn came to Stillman, he brought a new energy and began to rebuild relationships with the community, alumni and the nearby University of Alabama, said R.L. Guffin, a professor at Stillman for 44 years.
In 2002, he was inducted into the Tuscaloosa County Civic Hall of Fame by the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama.

An account of the resource
Dr. J. Barry Mason, born in Memphis, TN on March 24, 1941, and raised in Louisiana, was the seventh dean of The University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1963, and his Master’s and PhD degrees from the University of Alabama in 1964 and 1967.
His campus experience spanned more than 40 years, 22 of those as dean. In addition, he served as interim president of the University for a brief period. And he has played a major role in moving the state’s economy forward through his work in preventing the closure of the Rochester Carburetor plant and setting the foundation for the state’s thriving automobile manufacturing industry.
His scholarship and research is nationally known and recognized for excellence, receiving virtually every major award available from the University of Alabama and marketing and management institutes and organizations. Among these are: one of the top 100 marketing scholars in America over the past twenty years – Academy of Marketing Science Educator of the Year – Alabama National Alumni Association Outstanding Commitment to Teaching – Algernon Sydney Sullivan award – and many others. In 1998, he was recognized by the American Marketing Association for his ‘uncommon leadership’ that resulted in turning around the 40,000 plus member national association.
He is a co-founder of the Alabama Productivity Center; and while serving as interim president of the University of Alabama, he led the economic revitalization of ‘The Strip,’ the creation of the “Healthy Campus” initiative and expanded enrollment at the University.
Mason has been active in the Black Warrior Council of the Boy Scouts and is a past president of the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama. He was on the board of directors of the DCH Regional Healthcare Authority from 1986 to 2007 and served as chairman of the board of the Healthcare Authority for eight years. He serves on the DCH Healthcare Foundation board of directors and is a past Fellow. He also is past president of Challenge 21, a local community initiative established to enhance a program of deliberative dialogue on issues crucial to the future of the Tuscaloosa County area, is past president of Junior Achievement and a past member of the board of the Jack Warner Foundation.
In 2006 he was selected as an inductee into the West Alabama Civic Hall of Fame and recognized as a Pillar of West Alabama by the West Alabama Community Foundation for sustained contributions to the betterment of the West Alabama area. In 2008, Mason was selected as the Tuscaloosa County Citizen of the Year by the Civitan Club. He was inducted into the Alabama Business Hall of Fame in 2013.

Dr. Peter Bryce was superintendent of the Alabama Insane Hospital at Tuscaloosa (later to be named Bryce Hospital) for 31 years, beginning in 1860.
Bryce was born in 1834 in Columbia, South Carolina. At the age of 17 he entered the South Carolina Military Academy (the Citadel) at Charleston, graduating in 1855 with honors. For two years he read medicine with Dr. Samuel Fair and then entered the Medical Department of the University of New York. In 1860, Bryce was elected superintendent of the Insane Hospital that was under construction in Tuscaloosa. Bryce won national recognition by his humane methods of treating the mentally ill. He abolished the practice of using handcuffs and strait jackets to restrain patients.
Bryce married Ellen Clarkson from South Carolina in 1860. He was 26; she was 19. They came immediately to Tuscaloosa.
The Bryces lived in an apartment in the administration building of the hospital. They had no children of their own but raised the three children of Ellen Bryce's brother when his wife died.
Dr Bryce died in 1892 from Bright's Disease; Ellen Bryce lived another 37 years; she died in 1929.

An account of the resource
A photo of the 1882 King Bowstring Bridge reassembled and located in the Van de Graaff Park, 3231 Robert Cardinal Road, Northport.<br /><br />The original bridge which connected Northport and Tuscaloosa over the Black Warrior River was built starting in December 1881 opening on Christmas Day, 1882. It was built by the King Bridge Company of Cleveland, Ohio and was in use until 1896. At the time it was one of four steel and iron spans over the Black Warrior River in the Tuscaloosa area. The U.S. government required a new bridge - a draw-span bridge - be built to accomodate river traffic. Th 1882 bridge was dismantled and each span was relocated to various locations in Tuscaloosa County for use as single-span bridges. <br /><br />In 2008, the Friends of Historic Northport began the process of removing the only surviving span, securing necessary funds for this project, and seeking a location in Northport for it to be reconstructed as a historic structure. <br /><br />In 2010, a group of Van de Graaff family descendents, who owned the property which was once part of the Jemison plantation on Robert Cardinal Road, gave the property to the Friends of Historic Northport to be used as a park and site of the reconstructed bridge. In 2014, the Friends leased the land for $1 per year for 99 years to the Tuscaloosa Parks and Recreation Authority with the stipulation that PARA be responsible for developing and maintaining the park.<br /><br />Members of the Ironworkers local 92 under the direction of McAbee Construction reassembled the bridge according to the original factory specifications in the Park. The Park and the 1882 bridge were open to the public in September 2010.

1932 Tornado
Description
An account of the resource
This photo shows the aftermath of a tornado that hit Northport and Tuscaloosa County in 1932. It was taken by the 106th Observation Squadron of the Alabama National Guard and shows the Black Warrior River, the railroad trestle and Northport. The trestle appears intact, but damage is shown all around it.
This destructive F4 tornado on March 21, 1932, —the first of 10 this day in Alabama - began near Ralph, moved into the Fosters area, proceeded to western Tuscaloosa, and then struck the business section of Northport, destroying or damaging more than 400 homes and the school for black students. It destroyed about 100 homes in Tuscaloosa County as well as the Tuscaloosa Country Club but narrowly missed downtown Tuscaloosa. F2 damage occurred in the west side of town. About 2,000 people were left homeless from this tornado, and 37 were killed in the area.
