Description

First Wesleyan was the Tuscaloosa News Feature Church on February 20, 1970.

"First Wesleyan Church (formerly Wesleyan Methodist) is located at Greensboro Ave. and 20th street. The Wesleyan Church was formed in 1968 as a result of a merger between Pilgrim Holiness and Wesleyan Methodist Churches. The Wesleyan Church is essentially democratic in government with basic similarities to the government of the United States at general, district, and local levels.

The present Tuscaloosa Wesleyan Church was erected in 1954, however the organization was formed here about fifty years ago. The present membership is approximately 200. Rev. J.M. Byars is pastor and Rev. Richard Sims is assistant pastor whose primary responsibility is ministering to youth. The Sunday school is under the general superintendency of Mr. Harvey Hastings. Mrs. Julia Morgan is Director of Music and Church organist.

The Wesleyan Church believes the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired, the only authoritative Word of God. We believe that the Bible is the complete revelation of God's plan for the salvation of man and the divine and final authority for all Christian beliefs and practice.

We believe that man's return to God is only through the enabling of the Holy Spirit. We believe that both repentance and faith are conditions for obtaining the new birth. We believe that born-again Christians are called to be cleansed from a remaining sinful nature and filled with the Holy Spirit through a definite confession of inward sinfulness, a commitment of one's self to the will and way of God and an obedient faith in the promised cleaning through the blood of Jesus as stated in 1 John 1:9.

It is not the teaching of our church that this cleansing delivers from infirmities, ignorance, and mistakes which are common to man, but that in spite of these innate weaknesses a person who is truly committed to God, may by the grace of God, live a victorious Christian life."
