Description

First Church of the Nazarene was the Tuscaloosa News "Feature Church" on March 6, 1970.

"The First Church of the Nazarene is located at 628 29th. Street. Organized in the early 1920's, the church was located for many years at 2415 15th Street, until early 1966. At that time the church moved into its present location, a four-acre tract of land and a new church building. Through the years the First Church congregation has contributed members to other Nazarene congregations as they were organized, and today the church membership stands at approximately 160. The Church of Nazarene is Wesleyan in doctrinal emphasis. it holds to the plenary inspiration of the Bible and that the Bible contains all things necessary to man's salvation. We believe that whatever is not contained in the Holy Scriptures is not to be taught as God's Word. The Church of the Nazarene believes that man is born a sinner and is inclined to evil continually. We believe that Jesus Christ by his atoning death on the Cross has provided the only basis for salvation for the lost human family. Through repentance of sin and believing in Christ man can find salvation and fellowship with God. We believe that after regeneration of the Child of God may be filled with the Holy Spirit through consecration and faith. This experience comprehends the cleansing of the Christian from inbred, or original sin and empowering him for victorious living and faithful service to Christ. The First Church includes in its plans for the future, the erection of the main sanctuary with a seating capacity of approximately 500 people. They are presently worshiping in the Chapel. Presently plans are being executed to open a child care center as a service to working mothers in the neighborhood. Rev. W.E. Carruth is the present pastor. "
