Robert L. Glynn was born April 19, 1913 in Birmingham to Arthur and Fannie Bell (Banks) Glynn. He graduated from Alabama State University in 1938 and worked for the Tuscaloosa Housing Authority.
Glynn was instrumental in the establishment of the Benjamin Barnes Branch of the YMCA and served as its first chairman. He also was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Alabama State University and served as vice-president of the Board.
Glynn was active in the Hunter's Chapel AME Zion Church and was the author of "How Firm a Foundation: A History of the First Black Church in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama" which was published in 1976.
He married Ila Newell in 1941.
