Beasor Walker was a World War II hero who went on to serve as Tuscaloosa County sheriff for two decades. He was first elected sheriff in 1970 and served five terms before deciding not to run again in 1990.
Walker was born in Tuscaloosa County in 1922 to William Alexander Walker and Erdele Logan Walker.
After graduating from Tuscaloosa High School, he joined the U.S. Army and on D-Day, June 6, 1944, he landed on Omaha Beach and, by the war's end, he was one of the most decorated combat soldiers in Alabama history. Among his many awards were three Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts.
After World War 11, Beasor graduated from the University of Alabama and when the Korean War began, he remobilized with the Army and used his hard-earned knowledge to train replacement troops for Korea. After 35 years of service, Walker retired from the Alabama National Guard with the rank of Brigadier General.
Walker served with distinction as Tuscaloosa County Sheriff from 1971 to 1991, instilling a military-like discipline in the department.
Walker died April 3, 2013, and is buried at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.
