Subject

Mayors

Description

Wayne Rose served as mayor of Northport from 1988 to 2000, taking office after defeating incumbent Ed Robertson.

The Rose family has a long history of service to Northport. His uncle, George Rose, was a two-term Northport mayor during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Former Mayor J.D. Quarles is another Rose relative, a second cousin.

Prior to settling in Northport in the late 19th century, Rose's ancestors emigrated from the Carolinas to Yellow Creek, where the family operated a grist mill for many years.

Rose, who runs his family's lumberyard, had several 130-year-old hand-hewn timbers from that mill.

In 1976, Rose was elected to the Northport City Council; in 1980, he ran for re-election but was defeated. In 1984, he successfully ran for the council seat and won.
