Description
In the spring of 1947 a meeting of some 200 representatives from civic clubs, churches, organizations, and interested citizens was held in the First Methodist Church to consider the proposal of the Religious Council Youth Committee. This group of citizens voted to organize a YMCA and after due procedure the Association was incorporated and a Board of Trustees elected September 9, 1947. The new YMCA became a member of the Tuscaloosa County Community Chest for 1948.
In June, 1948, the property known as the Stringfellow House at 1105 Greensboro Avenue was purchased for a headquarters building. The building was in use until a new building was opened in April, 1959.
The YMCA building was open daily from 9 AM to 9:30 PM for informal use in games, reading, crafts, etc. as well as club meetings. On Friday evenings special programs for Jr. High students and on Saturday evenings special programs for Sr. High were held and the building remained open until 10:30.
