Description
Coach Bryant in a parka during his last game on December 29, 1982.
A great era at the University of Alabama ended on a cold day in December of 1982. The 1982 Liberty Bowl was Paul "Bear" Bryant's last game as the head football coach for Alabama. The team wanted to win badly for the aging coach and then did just that with a 21-15 win over Illinois. With this Liberty Bowl victory the 1982 squad finished with a record of 8-4 in Coach Bryant's final season at the Capstone.
Bryant was born in rural Arkansas in 1913 and helped work the family farm. He played on an Arkansas high school championship team and earned a scholarship to join the Crimson Tide. After positions at Maryland, Kentucky and Texas A&M he became the head coach at Alabama were he stayed for 25 seasons. Bryant retired in 1982 with a career record of 323-85-17.
