Description
City Cafe in Northport, AL, was opened in the 1940s by Bill Hitt when he returned from fighting in World War II. He owned the business with Hoyt Brasher until the 1960s.
When the men owned City Cafe, it was not the mecca for college students looking for a filling meal at a low cost that is is today. It served mostly working men.
At some point Hitt sold out to his partner. Brasher later sold it and it went through four owners before Joe Barger bought it in 1974. By that time, the last owner had closed it.
Barger conferred with Hitt and Brasher on the recipes of the food he served. Trying to keep the cost low, Barger did not accept credit cards until 2007, when he found he was losing customers who only had credit cards on them.
City Cafe, with about 23 employees, serves about 1,000 meals at lunchtime and has a steady stream of customers for breakfast.
