Laura B. Murphy was born August 17, 1889 in Scottsboro, Alabama. She completed her early educational training at Alabama A & M College. She moved to Tuscaloosa and was employed as a teacher at Central School.
She married Will T. Murphy, the first black licensed funeral director of Tuscaloosa. She organized a private school in her home.
Mrs. Murphy was later employed as assistant principal of St. Paul Lutheran School. There she served until appointed principal of the Twentieth Street Elementary School, where she worked until her death in 1956.
