Description

This view of Broad Street (now University Boulevard) in Tuscaloosa is of the north side of the street looking west. The centerpiece is the iconic bank building that has stood in Tucaloosa ssince it was built by the Merchant's Bank and Trust in the 1920s.

Beyond the bank building the white square building housed Johnnie's Restaurant and beyond it, Tucker Motor Company. Johnnie's occupied the corner where Embassy Suites now stands.

Next to the bank building sits the former Bama Theatre that became the Druid Theater when Bama moved to its Greensboro Avenue site. Tuscaloosa Drug Company, Mangel's, Louis Wiesel, Butler's Shoes, and Duckworth-Morris Insurance are shown.

The Duckworth-Morris building was erected in 1965 and was formerly the Bank of J.H. Fitts. The statue of Mercury on top of the building now stands in the lobby of Duckworth-Morris Real Estate building at 1312 Greensboro Avenue.
