Description
The Cochrane House and 20 acres of land on 15th Street in West Tuscaloosa were purchased as a new home for Stillman Institute in 1898. Founded as Tuscaloosa Institute, the name was changed in honor of its founder, Dr. Charles A. Stillman. It was renamed Stillman College in 1948.
The Cochrane house sat on the present grounds of Stillman College between Batchelor Hall and Birthright Alumni Hall. The Cochrane House was the main building on campus for many years and was used by the college for student housing for a time. It was demolished in the 1950s because of its poor state of repair.
The marble columns from the house grace the facade of Stillman College's Sheppard Library.
