Description

The Rosenau House was located at 919 Greensboro Avenue where District Lofts Apartments are standing in 2017; it was built in 1832 and razed in 1954.

The house was built by Mr. and Mrs. Simeon Eddins and had 14 immense columns extending from the floor to the roof.

The mansion was purchased by Herman Rosenau for $8,000 after the Civil War. Rosenau had opened a small store in Northport. The store prospered and Rosenau entered the cotton brokerage business. Once in Tuscaloosa, Rosenau went into partnership with Victor Friedman and opened the Atlanta Store that prospered.

He built and operated a hosiery mill in what is now the Rosedale area and opened a yarn mill in Cottondale.

Rosenau's fortunes declined after a fire destroyed the yarn mill and Rosenau died shortly thereafter. Rosenau's last surviving son died in 1948 and the house was sold to George Spigener, a funeral director, in 1951. However, Spigener found the house too expensive to maintain and razed the house in 1954.
