Description
Samuel Minturn Peck was the first Poet Laureate of Alabama. He was born in Tuscaloosa on November 4, 1854 to Elisha Wolsey and Lucy Lamb Peck. His father was a New York attorney who came to Tuscaloosa to practice and who eventually became chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. Peck was raised Tuscaloosa at a time when the oaks which appear in his poems still lined the streets.
Despite literary ambitions, Peck studied medicine "to please my parents," he wrote. He received his M.D. in 1879 but devoted more time to his literary hopes than practicing medicine. Peck died in Tuscaloosa in 1938.
