Title
Foster-Cummings House, 1600 Dearing Place, circa 1827
Subject
Houses and homes
Description
The Foster-Cummings House was built around 1827. The home was originally three-story and faced west, with high, straight steps leading to the second floor. In the 1930's, the two top stories were moved south to the present location, making it a two-story house with two sets of steps leading from the ground to the first floor veranda.
It has been said that this was the first Tuscaloosa house to contain a bathtub with running water coming from a tank above. The home was bought by Charles M. Foster in 1827 and his name is still engraved on the front door bell. The structure became the home of the O.M. Cummings family.
