Description

"Entrance to Pinehurst Subdivision"

The Pinehurst Company was formed in 1909 and consisted of three men: Dean Charles H. Barnwell of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dean Kaye of the Engineering School, and Frank Blair, who was the originator and president of the enterprise.

Dean Kaye designed the Pinehurst subdivision and Blair chiefly financed the project. The men began by adding cement sidewalks and curbs, plus the columns at the entrance of the subdivision. All three men built their own homes in the subdivision. By 1913, the Sam Friedman house had been built in the subdivision along with many other houses.

The subdivison was, and still remains, a distinctive section of Tuscaloosa.
