Presidents of the University of Alabama
Description
Alva Woods (1794-1887), a Baptist minister, became the first president of the University of Alabama in 1831. Woods was also instrumental in the founding of the Tuscaloosa Female College.
During his presidency at the University of Alabama, Woods envisioned "an almost cloistered school of rigid discipline and rigorous scholarship". His visions did not fit into those of the high-spirited youth of the University and his seven years at the University were tarnished by tension and conflict. He resigned in 1837.
