Description
Henderson Middleton Somerville was a professor and an Associate Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court who was instrumental in the formation of the University of Alabama School of Law, becoming the school's first dean.
Somerville held the post as dean from 1873 to 1890 and at the same time was an Associate Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.
In 1890, he was appointed by U.S. President Benjamin Harrison to the Board of Appraisers where he served as president from 1910 to 1914. His term ended when he died in 1915.
Henderson is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Tuscaloosa.
