Description
The First Presbyterian Church of Eutaw, Ala., was founded in 1824 as the Mesopotamia Presbyterian Church, in the small village of Mesopotamia, a mile west of what is now Eutaw. In the 1840s, the congregation decided to move to the bustling hub of economic activity in the fertile Black Belt of Alabama.
The present building was erected in 1851 and it was at this time that the name was changed to First Presbyterian Church.
Over the years, neither the exterior of the building nor the interior of the worship center has ben changed to any significant degree, except for the addition of an elevator, discreetly blended in with the décor in the rear of the worship center. The education building and the fellowship hall were added in 1959. In 1982, a memorial garden was donated and planted.
On December 16, 1974, the building was entered on the National Register of Historic Places.
