Description
The Kaul Lumber Company plant at Kaulton, in the southwestern part of Tuscaloosa, was founded in 1912. The firm built a company store, recreation center, a hotel, and residences for its workers, in what was described as a "model industrial community."
When the city acquired the old Kaul Lumber Company property in the early 1950s, it inherited a sawmill town where some people had lived for years in sub-standard housing. In the 1960s the city moved the people of Kaulton and razed many buildings and "shotgun" houses.
Part of the commissary is still standing as well as the office; these can be seen in the second photograph. Some of the houses in the first photograph are still standing on Pine Street behind Kaulton Park.
