On December 13, 1819, a flourishing community on the banks of the Black Warrior River was officially incorporated and named for Chief Tuskaloosa, the legendary leader of a band of Muskogean-speaking people.

Two centuries later, Tuscaloosa has earned recognition around the world as a dynamic city with a unique quality of life.  Throughour 2019, we are honoring our history and reflecting on new ways to create a better future for all citizens of Tuscaloosa.  That is the mission of Tuscaloosa 200.

The Bicentennial is centered around a lively and inclusive 12-month calendar of events that is entertaining, educating, and engaging people of all ages.  Along with official Tuscaloosa 200 activities, community organiations are presenting affiliated events featured on the Tuscaloosa 200 website:  www.tuscaloosa200.com

Monthly Bicentennial themes higlight Tuscaloosa's unique role in the history of our state and nation.  A Smartphone app, created in honor of the Bicentennial, takes participants on a driving and walking tour of the city.  A community reading experience featruring the first comprehensive history of the city by acclaimed author Guy W. Hubbs, and innovative K-12 programming will create an enduring legacy for generations to come.
