Lt. Ray P. Saffold was killed on July 22, 1918, while serving with the 28th Regiment, 1st Division in France. Lt. Saffold was a native of Selma, Alabama who graduated from the University of Alabama in 1893 and the University of Alabama Law School in 1894. Lt. Saffold was the son of the late Judge M.F. Saffold and the brother of UA faculty member Dr. W.B. Saffold.
