2Lt. William (Billy) James was killed on August 8, 1944, when he bailed out of his P-47 plane over France. Lt. James was a Tuscaloosa native and graduate of the University of Alabama. Lt. James was the husband of Robbie Rutland and the son of Rev. and Mrs. W.K.E. James of Tuscaloosa. For his service Lt. James was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and other awards. A photo of Lt.
