Description
Sam Friedman was a pioneer in the development of Tuscaloosa and an authority on the history of the area.
Friedman was the son of the late Bernard Friedman, a Tuscaloosa merchant who immigrated from Hungary.
Friedman and his brother, Victor Hugo Friedman, along with A.C. Cade Sr., organized the Tuscaloosa Rotary Club in 1916.
Friedman was a member of the first Board of Commissioners for the city of Tuscaloosa which was appointed by the governor of Alabama in the early 1900s.
Friedman and his brother established three golf courses in Tuscaloosa. The first was between Evergreen Cemetery and the Alabama Great Southern Railway Station. A few years later, the pair established a golf course at Guilds Woods, and later, helped establish the Tuscaloosa Country Club.
A native Tuscaloosan, Friedman graduated in engineering from the University of Alabama and Columbia College in New York.
Following the death of his father, Friedman was made manager of Friedman & Loveman, a clothing store in Tuscaloosa.
Friedman wrote a series of articles on the history of Tuscaloosa for The Tuscaloosa News.
