Description
Lue C. Mims Jr. coached football at Tuscaloosa Junior High and Druid High School — the only high school that blacks could attend during the 1960s before desegregation — from 1951 to 1986. Mims is viewed by many of the city's West End residents as a legend as big as Paul W. Bryant, a former University of Alabama head football coach.
An Alabama High School Athletic Association and Coaches Association meritorious service award winner, Mims led the Druid Dragons in 1968 to their first undefeated 10-0 season since 1937, and was the first black certified swimming coach in Tuscaloosa,
His former players say he was a father figure who commanded the respect of thousands. Mims died in 1998.
