Description
Dr. Alston Fitts was the son of James Harris Oliver Fitts and Mary Burgess. Dr. Fitts was a native of Tuscaloosa. He was both baptized and confirmed at Christ Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa. Dr. Fitts received his A.B. from the University of Alabama in 1886 and his L.L.B. in 1887. It was not until 1895 however that he obtained his medical degree from the Medical Department of Columbia College in New York City.
According to his obituary in the Tuscaloosa News, he returned from New York in 1900 to set up his medical practice. It was said that he delivered more babies in Tuscaloosa between 1900-1920 than other other person during a similar span of time. He was well loved in this community because he did deliver so many of its residents.
