Title
Lift Bridge and City of Tuscaloosa, circa 1970
Subject
Bridges
Description
This aerial photo shows the lift bridge across the Black Warrior River from Northport to Tuscaloosa about 1970. The bridge was demolished in 1973 when the new Hugh Thomas Bridge was constructed.
Greensboro Avenue begins at the bridge and proceeds up what was known as River Hill. The ten-story bank building is on the left at the top of the hill where Greensboro Avenue intersects with University Boulevard. Tuscaloosa Chevrolet is the large group of buildings near the river. On the right on the hill is the Burchfield Hotel.
The unoccupied area on the right was the former site of Stallworth Lake and, later, the city dump.
