Description
Clara L. Verner dedicated her life to teaching and community work.
Beginning in 1901, she taught in the Tuscaloosa public schools for 51 years. She was principal of Tuscaloosa High School for 27 of those years and spent 7 years as director of guidance.
Verner expanded her interest to community work and became president of several civic organizations. Her work made her the first woman to receive the Civitan Club's Citizen of the Year Award in 1941. She was honored by the Business and Professional Women's Club as its Woman of Achievement.
Verner retired in 1952, and in 1953, she organized the Tuscaloosa Retired Teachers Association. Two years later, she took the organization state-wide as the Alabama Retired Teachers Association and served as its president for the next ten years.
