Description
Northport lost one of its most influential citizens when John Paul Faucett died in 2009 at 68 years of age after a three-year battle with cancer.
Faucett was the son of Sam Palmer Faucett Jr. and Gwendolyn Dyer Faucett. Sam Faucett Jr. worked in his family business in Northport – Christian Faucett Store - and Gwendolyn Faucett was a teacher. The couple had two children, John Paul Faucett and Sam Faucett III.
In the 1950s John Paul Faucett made a name for himself as a basketball player at Tuscaloosa County High School and then attended the University of Alabama and Mississippi State University.
Faucett spent much of his life running the family business that was originally a general store that sold everything from groceries to clothes, kerosene and mules. The store had been on Northport’s Main Avenue since the 1880s. Today the store is known as Faucett’s Clothing Store. He also served as an insurance agent in Northport for over 45 years.
Faucett devoted time and effort to the revitalization of downtown Northport that in the mid-1990s, as a project called Renaissance Revitalization, revamped Northport’s streetscape, adding lighting, pavers, parking and beautification to the area. Faucett was a leader in the renovation and expansion of Williamson Cemetery on Fifth Street in Northport, a cemetery developed in the 1890s. He served on the boards of Shirley Place and Friends of Historic Northport and was named Outstanding Northport Business Leader of the Year in 2001.
