Description

The Fitch House, also known as the Holman House, was built circa 1835 by the Fitch family. There are no records of ownership of the house until 1910 when Mrs. J.A. Townsend purchased the house. Later owners were the I.A. Robertsons, who sold the house to P.K. Guin in 1932. In 1943, the Holmans purchased the house.

Situated in the western part of town, originally a separate city called Newtown, the Holman house was one of the many grand houses in the area. In 1846, a tornado destroyed much of Newtown and a later tornado left the area with only three or four historic homes, one of which was the Holman House.

Architecturally, the house has extremely refined lines, with graceful features inside and out, a pleasant change of pace from the heavy, massive, interpretations of classical architecture so prevalent in Tuscaloosa. The Holman House has survived storms and time to remain as one of the area's unique architectural works.
