Description

Sale of the Foster House, now known as the Foster-Cummings House, 1899.

This advertisement for the sale of what was then known as the Foster House was published in the Tuscaloosa Times - Trade Edition on Friday, May 12, 1899. The house is described in the advertisement as "located on ten acres fronting on Queen City Street."

Originally the house, built about 1827, had three stories. In the 1930s, the two top stories were moved south to 1600 Dearing Place, making it a two-story house with two sets of steps leading from the ground to the first floor veranda.

According to "Past Horizons," (Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society, 1978), " the ornate plastered frescoed ceiling cannot be surpassed. The graceful circular stairs in the wide entrance hall and the long veranda across the back with steps leading to the second floor are all original. The home has both Doric and Ionic columns on the first and second floor porticos.

It has been said that this was the first Tuscaloosa house to contain a bath tub with running water coming from a tank above. The home was bought by Charles M. Foster in 1827 and his name is still engraved on the front door bell."

In 1978, the structure was the home of the O.M. Cummings family.
